How to Determine the Strength of Diamond Micron Powder?

Diamond Micron Powder refers to diamond particles with a particle size finer than 54 microns, mainly including single-crystal diamond micron powder and polycrystalline diamond micron powder. As single-crystal diamond micron powder has a large production volume and wide application fields, the industry generally refers to diamond micron powder specifically as single-crystal diamond micron powder. Single-crystal diamond micron powder is produced by crushing and shaping static synthetic single-crystal diamond abrasives using special processes for ultra-hard materials.

Diamond micron powder has high hardness and good wear resistance, and can be widely used for cutting, grinding, drilling, polishing, etc. It is an ideal raw material for grinding and polishing high-hardness materials such as cemented carbide, ceramics, gemstones, and optical glass.

How to Evaluate the Quality of Diamond Micron Powder

The quality of diamond micron powder can be evaluated from five aspects: micron powder strength, particle size distribution, large particles, particle shape, and impurity content. There are relatively mature methods for inspecting the other four indicators: particle size distribution, large particles, particle shape, and impurity content, which have allowed better control over these aspects of micron powder quality. Therefore, the strength of diamond micron powder has become the main factor affecting product quality. The strength of diamond micron powder cannot be directly detected by mechanical methods. Most production and application enterprises still rely on experience, making it difficult to control the quality of the produced diamond micron powder.

Factors Affecting the Strength of Diamond Micron Powder

Strength of the Single-Crystal Raw Material

The strength of diamond micron powder is related to the single-crystal raw material used and the production process. Generally, the higher the strength of the diamond raw material, the higher the strength of the produced diamond micron powder.

Synthesis Time of the Single-Crystal Raw Material

Diamond is created by converting graphite under high temperature and high pressure, a process known as diamond synthesis. The longer the synthesis time, the more complete the crystallization state of the diamond, with fewer internal crystal defects and impurities. As a result, the produced micron powder has a higher wear resistance and strength grade. Internal crystal defects and impurities are important factors affecting the strength grade of diamond micron powder.

Micron Powder Production Process

Diamond micron powder is obtained by crushing single-crystal diamond raw materials. Currently, the crushing process in the production of diamond micron powder mostly adopts the jet milling method. The grade of the micron powder is affected by the parameters of the crushing process, such as airflow speed, pressure, and the adjustment of the sorting wheel. Therefore, it is necessary to reasonably adjust the crushing process parameters to ensure that the micron powder particles achieve the same crushing objective with a minimal number of collisions. Only then can high-strength raw materials produce high-strength micron powder. Otherwise, high-strength raw materials do not necessarily produce high-strength micron powder.

Micron Powder Surface Treatment Process

Strong alkaline and strong acidic surface treatment processes are usually used to remove external impurities from diamond micron Powder. To improve the self-sharpening of the micron powder, surface treatment methods are also used to treat diamond micron powder to achieve a "polycrystalline-like" effect. Therefore, micron powder production enterprises must choose the surface treatment process reasonably and avoid excessive treatment in pursuit of appearance. Strong alkaline and acidic surface treatment can damage the crystallization state of the diamond particle surfaces, increasing surface defects and reducing wear resistance and grade. Diamond micron powder produced from residual material of diamond fragments significantly lowers the grade of the micron powder strength.
