Application and Development Trend of Diamond Powder

Whether it is natural or synthetic diamond powder, it is a kind of super-hard fine abrasive in the world today. With the development of high and new technology, it is more and more widely used in various industrial sectors.

Before the mid-1960s, 70% of the natural diamonds used in the Soviet Union in the industry were used for crushing to make diamond powder, diamond grinding paste and diamond tools. Since the artificial gold stone was put into industrial-scale production, this part of natural diamond products has been almost completely replaced by artificial diamond. According to statistics, by the 1990s, the annual output of the former Soviet Union artificial diamond reached about 100 million carats. This shows that the rapid development of artificial diamond in the former Soviet Union and the large amount of diamond powder.

The grinding capacity of diamond is 1.25 times larger than cubic boron nitride, 2.85 to 3.57 times larger than silicon carbide, and 6.25 to 7.14 times larger than white corundum. Therefore, as a super-hard abrasive, diamond powder has an extremely superior grinding ability, and is increasingly valued by developed countries. The grinding capacity of diamond powder includes the grinding ability of the workpiece and its own resistance to wear and pulverization, which depends on its microhardness, particle size, strength, particle shape, and thermal and chemical stability.

In summary, there are three major aspects of the application of diamond powder as an abrasive:

1. It is used for precision grinding or polishing of various precision components in industry, science and medicine;

2. It is used in the manufacture of resin bonding tools, metal bonding tools and electroplating tools;

3. It is used as a fine abrasive for mold processing, gem polishing, and gem bearing manufacturing.

In addition to being used as abrasive materials, industrial diamond micro powders are also used as functional materials, such as using their thermal and electrical properties. Industrial diamond micro powderis mixed with thermosetting resin polymer, cellulose, phenol resin or ceramic sheet to make a new material with improved thermal conductivity and reduced thermal expansion. Mixing industrial diamond micro powder into metal flakes, such as nickel flakes or stainless steel flakes, can be made into new flake materials with high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion and light weight. It can be made into high-density and high-energy devices for thermal control in the electronics industry.

In terms of the form of diamond used as an abrasive material, according to figures published in relevant data, more than 60% of industrial diamond micro powderconsumed worldwide is used to make diamond abrasive pastes, diamond micro powder mixtures, and diamond micro powder grinding fluids.
